New app could help appease fears about wind turbine developments

A Scottish start-up, Linknode has created 3-D software that it claims could revolutionise the wind farm development industry and take the politics out of the equation.
Ventus AR is an application that enhances methods of ‘visual impact assessment’. It also allows users to use the software on a handheld device. The software would then use a tablet’s integrated camera, GPS position and 3-D gaming capabilities to create an accurate, location-specific and realistic view of animated 3-D turbine models.
What this ultimately allows for is a live feed from any location regarding conditions and improves assessments of a potential development.
“We understand the planning system and that visualisation is one of the biggest and most contentious issues for renewables projects.” Crispin Hoult, managing director of Linknode, said.
The solution could not only help speed up planning, but also help take the heat of political debates about the development of wind farms and other structures. There would be no human manipulation or intervention of the data; a third party could independently audit all visual records created.

There is flexibility involved as well.
“Alternative models can be easily downloaded allowing different layouts or turbine heights to be interactively viewed instantly from any location,” Hoult said. “What VentusAR offers is a more flexible, integrated, efficient and dynamic companion tool for visual impact assessment.”
This technology could possibly bridge the gap between imagination and reality. There would be no need for a physical structure to be able to visualise a prototype at any real-time location.
