Mayor of London’s Office launches ‘smart cities’ competition

The Mayor of London’s Office is today calling on entrepreneurs and innovative businesses to enter a ‘smart cities’ competition that could see their ideas adopted by major regeneration projects across the capital.
The Smart London Districts Challenge-led Innovation Competition is looking for digital technology solutions to help London’s growing population better connect with its surroundings through navigation and ‘wayfinding’ solutions. The smart cities competition is a partnership between the Mayor of London’s Office and the innovation charity the Institute for Sustainability and involves some of the capital’s highest-profile redevelopment districts, including Battersea Nine Elms, Croydon, Elephant and Castle, Imperial West and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Cutting edge apps
The competition is open to individuals, companies, research and academic institutes, as well as public sector bodies, but is particularly looking to help small businesses get their innovative ideas to market and show how the use of smart technology can contribute to sustainable development of cities. Winning entries could include cutting edge apps that directly engage and interface with visitors and residents to help with decision making or incentivise behaviour change, or digital tools that use real-time visualisation or modelling of people/traffic movement in the district.
“As London grows, places to work and live are being transformed and renewed. This competition will offer the capital’s businesses the opportunity to harness the power of new technologies to improve the lives of Londoners,” Kit Malthouse, Deputy Mayor for Business and Enterprise said.
Sustainable cities
The five redevelopment districts taking part in the competition are part of the Smart London Districts Network and have identified a need for smart solutions to help residents, visitors and businesses in their areas better connect with their surroundings.
“We are working directly with organisations delivering large-scale redevelopment projects, to show how utilisation of smart technology can make a significant contribution to the economic, environmental and social sustainability of cities and communities,” Ian Short, chief executive of the Institute for Sustainability, said.
Winners will be invited to pitch their innovations to the Smart London Districts Network members later in the year. The deadline for submissions is February 20 2015.
