European Green Capital 2015: How Bristol Celebrated

In 2015 Bristol was the first city to be awarded the European Green Capital Award. The European Green Capital Award’s aim is to encourage and support European cities to make eco-friendly advances and to create schemes that are beneficial to the overall environment. It is rewarded to cities that have already tackled environmental problems, but the award is intended more towards spurring the winning city into dedicating many future environmentally friendly initiatives.
How Has Bristol Celebrated Winning the Award?
Bristol showed enough evidence of a high environmental standard, a commitment to future eco-friendly initiatives and showed itself to be one of the UK’s most environmental hotspots.
After winning the award the city established Bristol 2015 Ltd.- a new company that would collaborate with the Bristol City Council, Bristol Green Capital Partnership and many other UK and EU companies that focus on the environment, arts, business and education. The company was created to organise the events and projects that would be showcased for the award throughout 2015.
Projects
The city and various companies committed themselves to some environmental projects that are set to ease the future environmental problem facing most of the UK’s big cities. Renewable energy such as wave/tidal generators, the Bristol Fish Project and the city’s public transport system were just some of the projects that were committed to.
Events
Throughout the year, Bristol celebrated winning the European Green Capital Award by holding special events that highlighted the importance of environmentally friendly practices, technologies and initiatives to the public.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year
The Natural History Museum held an exhibition for the 50th anniversary of The Wildlife Photographer of the Year, where the public were able to view some of the most spectacular photographs ever taken of the natural world.
50 Things Family Bug Hunt
In amongst the dozens of family friendly activities the ‘Bug Hunt’ was a firm favourite. Children got to explore the woodlands and get educated on all the critters living there. A Snail Race ended the event off on a high.
Lectures
The Natural History Museum, schools and universities all held well-attended lectures on various environmental subjects with prestigious guest speakers from all around the world.
The city also hosted walks, clean ups, various exhibitions and hundreds of other events to celebrate being awarded the European Green Capital Award. Most importantly though – Bristol dedicated itself to creating a more environmentally friendly future.
