MSc Renewable Energy and the Built Environment

Based at CAT’s RIBA award-winning Wales Institute for Sustainable Education the MSc offers a well-balanced combination of practical training and academic study. It aims to explore the practice and theory of renewable energy technologies with special reference to the built environment.

The course is validated by the Energy Institute and the University of East London and is delivered by leading professionals and specialist visitors from the industry. It offers students an academic programme with the practical application of research and development that has established CAT as Europe’s leading eco–centre.

The MSc is affordable and extremely flexible. There are eight modules to complete over a period of one year for full time students, and two years for part-time. Students will choose from modules covering subjects such as Biomass, Solar PV, Wind Power, Solar Thermal and Hydro Electricity. Coursework for each module usually consists of an essay or report, and a presentation. Students also complete a thesis at the end of the course.

Graduated students have gone on to set up consultancy businesses, work for large, international energy companies and even looking at applying green energy solutions in third world locations.

MSc Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies

The MSc Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies course provides a holistic approach to sustainable design, architecture and building. Taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology, the course is based in the 2011 RIBA award winning Wales Institute for Sustainable Education. Various teaching methods draw on the expert knowledge of our tutors, and on the Centre for Alternative Technology’s 35 years of experience in teaching sustainability.

The course is affordable and extremely flexible, students complete eight modules over the space of one year for full-time students, and two years for part-time; each module is taught over one week per month, allowing students to continue with careers or other projects whilst studying for their masters.

MSc Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies

Delivery: Distance Learning

The MSc Architecture distance learning programme goes to the heart of the issues crucial to sustainable architecture and design in the built environment. The current 200 students are mature, enthusiastic and widely experienced.

The course aims to explore the relationship between people, technology and the environment, whilst focusing on the environmental impact of buildings. From the large scale to the detail, students develop a deep understanding of intra-disciplinary approaches to the design, adaptation and management of our living environment. The course covers areas such as global energy, resources and sustainability in buildings: energy, environment, materials and design. Flexibility is its keynote: study when and where it suits you, start in March or September, pursue in depth the topics of your choice, study over one year or two, and pause the course if other commitments arise.
