Travel GreenWire: Econogo launches electric scooter in the UK

Econogo
6th May 2010
British company econogo has launched yogo, the UK’s first electric scooter that uses a fully detachable and portable lithium battery.
Traditionally, electric two-wheelers in the UK have used impractical fixed silicon batteries which require the owner to run an extension lead from a mains electricity socket to the vehicle’s integrated battery. For the first time, owners can remove and charge their battery like a mobile phone in their own home, or even at work, making electric two wheelers more suitable for busy lifestyles.

Yogo is available in two options – as a moped, the equivalent of a 50cc petrol engine moped with a 27mph capability, or unrestricted 1500W motorcycle with a 38mph capability. Owners will need a CBT licence to drive the second option.

The new yogo, is now available to buy online and offers a totally stylish and bespoke scooter that brings convenience to a market that has been slow to evolve as a result of incumbent fixed batteries.

Econogo has launched at a crucial time when there is strong consumer and political demand for greener alternatives to petro-engines. This, together with its cutting edge patented design, which offers much-needed convenience to buyers, will allow it to become a major player in the 50cc-100cc arena and re-shape the current market.

Background
Both versions of the yogo have a competitive retail price of £1999. Offering the utmost in convenience, yogo can store a second detachable battery, meaning that the scooter will run for 22 + 22 miles using both batteries, giving it a clear edge against traditional fixed battery models. Batteries recharge in one hour; far less than with conventional cumbersome models which are highly impractical requiring four to eight hours in order to achieve a partial/full charge via an extension lead.

Yogo offers a detachable batteries that fit neatly under the seat of the vehicle.

Owners have the added security that the yogo will remain powerless on the street when the battery is detached.

James South, founder of econogo, commented: "We believe that much of the <100cc motorbike/scooter market can now be captured by electric vehicles. Our detachable battery offers people the utmost in convenience and style, as well as being excellent value for money."

Econogo was founded one and half years ago.
