Toyota’s ‘Global Vision’ to focus on more hybrid cars

9th March 2011
Toyota Motor Corp, the company behind the Prius, plans to launch 10 new hybrid vehicles as well as continue work on constructing plug-in hybrids, pure electric vehicles as well as fuel cell vehicles, over the next four years.
Toyota unveiled the plans as part of its 2015 Global Initiatives, announced today. The company hopes the strategy will bring a five per cent return on sales and an operating profit of £7.4 billion.

The initiative comes after Toyota has sold over three million hybrid vehicles since 1997. The current fleet includes 16 hybrid options.

"Together, we will write a new chapter of Toyota history," said Akio Toyoda, Toyota Motor Corp president today.

Sales plan
While Toyota plans to continue to develop vehicles with lower environmental impacts, the sales plan for 2015 also includes increasing the company’s presence in emerging markets so that it sees the same success there as the company has seen in Japan, Europe and the US.

In 2010, emerging markets made up 40 per cent of sales, and the company hopes to equalise industrialised nations and emerging markets at around 50 per cent each. The company is looking to bring its environmentally friendly vehicles into all markets that it operates in.

Didier Leroi, Toyota Motor Europe president, told the BBC that compared to growth in the East, the company expected to see a two to three per cent decline in the West, but overall to see sales grow "10 per cent this year in Europe."

Research and development

To continue to promote technology with lower environmental impacts, Toyota plans to continue its research and development methods on smart grids. In addition to making cars that have lower environmental impacts when on the road, Toyota is looking to lessen their impacts during the manufacturing process by reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions and promoting recycling for more of the materials used.
