A student who designed a ‘green’ seaside project for a Merseyside resort has won the prize for Most Sustainable Design in a competition held as part of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture.
Anthony Delleur’s design, ‘Walking On Water’, featured a water folly, ferry terminal, winter garden and holiday cabin, for the seaside resort of New Brighton in Merseyside. It was designed with sustainability at the core of the project, said Delleur, an architecture student at Liverpool JMC.

“The first thought process of an architect today needs to be sustainability,” commented Delleur after winning his award.  “In order to create a functional design, it is important to incorporate sustainability from the outset, rather than trying to add it on as an afterthought. Sustainable design is going to be more of a necessity for architectures of the future.”

The design competition was organised by Royal Haskoning, the international engineering and environmental consultancy. The panel of judges, included Prof. Phil Redmond from Open Culture and Rob Mason of Neptune Developments.

The overall winner of the competition was Michael Otchie, a final year architecture student at the University of Liverpool, who designed ‘New Brighton Seahouse’, a modern interpretation of two quintessential British institutions – the teahouse and the chip shop.

“The design competition has given us a fascinating insight into how the next generation of architects and planners view the New Brighton of today. I am sure the ideas from our talented entrants will give a lot of food for thought when any future waterside projects for New Brighton are being considered,” said Royal Haskoning Liverpool director of Building and Infrastructure, David Ricketts.
