After completing a 12-month improvement programme to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, Smurfit Kappa Recycling has received the Environment Management System standard, BS EN ISO14001, across all of its UK sites and depots.
Smurfit Kappa Recycling, which operates eight regional centres that deal
with the recovery of cardboard, office papers and plastics, security
shredding and waste disposal as well as two paper mills that are fed by the paper and packaging recovered by the company, achieved the standard by reducing energy consumption and educating staff.
Gary Grant, UK operations manager, said the accreditation demonstrated the company's commitment to environmental protection in all aspects of its operations. "Diverting recovered fibre from traditional waste outlets such as landfills has a positive impact on the environment and Smurfit Kappa Recycling has a proud history of diverting substantial volumes," he said.
Smurfit Kappa Recycling also achieved the OHSAS18001 Occupational
Health and Safety Management System standard, in part because of its stringent health and safety procedures to protect its employees and
other parties associated with its operations, which range from
collection and transportation to baling and shredding.
“Accreditation to these important markers in quality,
environmental protection and health and safety is a fantastic
achievement and will enable Smurfit Kappa Recycling to compete in an
increasingly demanding market," commented health and safety manager Mark
Montgomery.
Smurfit Kappa Recycling is part of the Smurfit Kappa Group, the world’s largest fibre-based packaging group and in the UK.
