One of the UK’s leading energy suppliers has turned to SMS messaging in a bid to get its staff to cut down on car travel.
EDF Energy has teamed up with PageOne Communication to provide the mobile messaging solution to staff at two of its sites in the South East of England. The programme, which promotes car-sharing and ensures more efficient use of parking spaces, has already contributed to a 64 per cent reduction in unused reserved parking spaces, according to EDF.

"We have worked extremely hard to establish a successful green travel scheme," said Gary Oliver, EDF Energy’s Project Lead. "PageOne’s two-way messaging service has made it a lot easier for our employees to manage their parking requests […] It has helped reduce the number of car journeys by staff, which helps cut carbon emissions and its ease of use has gone down very well with staff."

EDF is committed to delivering 20 per cent reduction in its carbon emissions from transport by 2012. The SMS programme is part of that drive is being employed at EDF sites in Worthing and Hove where over 2,000 staff are based and where there are 500 parking spaces available.

With around 50-100 parking spaces released everyday by employees who no longer need their space the next day, the service enables members of staff who are not a priority for parking to text into the 24-hour service to apply for a parking space.

"Green travel is one of the many ways we are working to reduce our carbon emissions," said Darren Towers, EDF Energy’s head of Sustainability.
