North Ayrshire approves new community wind farm

North Ayrshire Councillors have approved a six turbine, 18 megawatt (MW) community wind farm just east of West Kilbride on the boundary of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park.
The Millour Hill Community Windfarm is being developed by Community Windpower Ltd and will generate enough power for 13,000 local homes. Millour will run alongside Community Windpower’s Dalry Community Windfarm, another six turbine, 18MW farm, which came online in 2006.

Community Windpower, based in Cheshire, develops small to medium-scale wind farms across the UK and says it works with the local communities "to provide educational and environmental benefits which are also tailored to meet the requirements of local residents and community groups".

The company says the Millour Windfarm will benefit the local community with initiatives such as helping local people to reduce their carbon footprint, tackling fuel poverty in the area and funding for home energy audits for families most likely to live in fuel poverty.

Rod Wood, director for Community Windpower Ltd, said: “This is a great decision and we are pleased that North Ayrshire Council has taken another positive step in continuing to support renewable energy in the region. Millour Hill Community Windfarm will aid the fight to reduce carbon emissions in Scotland and tackle climate change”.
