Nokia confirmed green leader in O2 eco rating table

Nokia has topped a list of eco-friendly handsets compiled by leading mobile phone and service provider O2 released today.
The Nokia C6 and Nokia E7 were both highly ranked in O2’s independently verified Eco Rating Scheme. Samsung and Sony phones were also among the top six handsets reviewed.

Ratings ranged from one to five and were based on a variety of factors including the environmental impact of the device, how it helps people lead more sustainable lives and the ethical performance of the manufacturer.

Other ratings
Nokia mobile phones also took the lead in a similar list compiled by GoodGuide, with the company’s handsets taking the top 25 spots. Sony, Samsung, Palm and Motorola were listed as high performers as well.

The Nokia C6, Nokia E7 and Sony Ericsson X8 models were highly ranked by both O2 and GoodGuide. Other models varied in placement and scores when comparing the two organisations’ ratings.

Independently verified
O2’s Eco rating system was developed under a partnership with independent sustainability experts at Forum for the Future and was created with the intention of leading customers to make informed decisions, O2 said.

"Although the environmental impact of a mobile phone may seem trivial when compared to say a car or fridge, when you consider the vast volumes of mobiles in circulation across the globe, their impact adds up," Simon Lee-Smith, O2’s head of Devices, said. "We know more and more customers want this level of product transparency, and we’re very grateful to the handset manufacturers for their engagement with Eco rating."

Think Big
According to O2’s release, the Eco Rating Scheme falls under its larger, umbrella operation supporting sustainability, the 'Think Big' sustainability programme. Other initiatives taken on by the programme include O2 Recycle.

O2’s Sustainability Team will be on Twitter at 14:00 BST on Friday, May 27 to discuss the company’s environmental initiatives with customers.
