A new website has launched that aims to make it easier for those looking to commute by bike.
The
Cycling Commuter aims to provide all the information commuters need to make their
bicycle journeys safe, cheaper and more enjoyable. It has been launched by US bicycle firm,
Specialized Bicycle Components, in partnership with UK charities and organisations including national mapping agency,
Ordnance Survey,
cyclescheme, which works with companies to provide tax-free bikes for work, and
Sustran, the charity that promotes travel by foot, bike or public transport.
CTC, the national cyclists organisation, is also a partner.
As well a special offers, the site provides tips on how to get started for those new to cycle commuting and explains the health, financial and other benefits of cycling. It also provides advice from converted commuters on how to overcome common excuses for not cycling to work, such as getting sweaty, having your bike stolen and bad weather.
"Aside from the obvious health benefits, cycling to and from work will transform your wallet, your mood, your view on the city you live in and play a huge part in reducing carbon emissions," the site declares.
Cycling is growing in the UK. According to a recent
report by the London School of Economics it was worth £3 billion to the economy in 2010. The report found 208 million cycle journeys were made in the UK last year and estimates a 20 per cent increase in current cycling levels by 2015 could save the economy £207 million in terms of reduced traffic congestion and £71 million in terms of lower pollution levels.
