Arsenal has become the latest football club to embrace recycled materials in its team's kit.
Arsenal Football club has unveiled the players' latest h
ome kit – made out of
plastic bottles otherwise destined for landfill.
The kit, which celebrates the Club’s 125th anniversary in 2011/12, is 70s in style, but the shirts and shorts have been fashioned out of
recycled polyester made from plastic bottles discarded in Japan and Taiwan, the club said.
The kit was produced by Nike under its 'Considered Design’ programme. The initiative sees plastic bottles washed and chopped into tiny flakes and melted down into yarn and then spun to make the recycled fabric. According to Nike the process reduces energy consumption by up to 30 per cent compared to conventional fabrics.
Commenting on the new kit, Arsenal player Theo Walcott, said: "The colours are very traditional, it feels nice and it’s made from recycled plastic bottles so what more can you ask for?"
Other clubs using Nike kits using recycled materials include FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Celtic.
Nike said use of recycled polyester across its new range of club kits has saved nearly 13 million plastic water bottles, a total of around 254,000 kilogrammes of polyester waste.
