Mandelson says Labour can deliver green jobs

In his first speech since the election campaign got underway yesterday, Business Secretary Peter Mandelson has said that Labour can deliver the green jobs Britain needs to remain competitive.
Speaking to Progress and the Foreign Press Association today, Mandelson said there were “manifold opportunities” in the new markets opening up for high tech goods in areas like sustainable energy and that a Labour Government had the “strategic approach” needed to secure these jobs in a globalised world.

He said Britain’s future jobs lay in sectors such as health, education and sustainable energy, and Labour had “a new progressive answer” to concerns about future jobs.

“The reality is that these jobs are not going to emerge out of the air,” he declared. “They require a government ready to take a strategic approach to skills, technology, science, and infrastructure.”

Mandelson said Britain needed a government with “a positive commitment to work in partnership with business to develop new sources of growth.

“We have to develop new private sector sources of growth for the British economy outside financial services, and in every part of Britain,’ he said.

He said the country also needed a government that would make sure that “we don’t miss the boat in the way we have in the past on wind power or nuclear energy”.

He said that you couldn’t just assume that the market was always right and that the Conservatives didn’t get this.

“For them it’s the old Tory mantra – cut taxes, whatever the consequences for the deficit, whatever the implications in public spending, and that’s the way to secure growth,” he said.
