Lincolnshire biomass plant gets go-ahead

An £80 million straw-fired power plant has been given the go-ahead in Lincolnshire.
The 40MW power station at Sleaford is being developed by Eco2. The plant is expected to generate enough power for 65,000 homes and its developers say will create 80 jobs at the facility. It will be fuelled by 240,00 tonnes of straw sourced from within a 30-mile radius of the plant.

The station had been rejected earlier in the year by the local planning committee on visual grounds, but it was granted approval this week. Local councillors voted 24-to-nine in favour of revised plans that reduced the plant’s height by about 10 feet.

Eco2 said it expected the approval would pave the way for more straw-fired power plants around the UK.

Eco2 specialises in initiating, developing, financing and operating renewable energy projects throughout the UK, from onshore wind, to landfill gas and biomass.

The company is behind a proposal for another straw-powered fire station near the town of Brigg in Lincolnshire and is involved in the Western Wood Energy plant in Port Talbot.
