Furniture retailer IKEA has launched a recycling employee awareness programme as part of its drive to send zero waste to landfill.
The '
Recycle for IKEA’ employee training and awareness programme has been launched in partnership with waste management firm and IKEA appointed contractor
Viridor. Its aim is to improve understanding of
recycling and encourage more participation in recycling among IKEA’s 700
employees that work in its distribution centres.
The programme was launched last week at IKEA’s distribution centre in Peterborough, the first of two roadshows Viridor will next be taking to the retailer’s northern distribution centre in Doncaster later this summer.
Zero waste to landfill
IKEA has set itself a target of zero waste to landfill by 2015 and is already saving more than £1 million a year in the UK through recycling material, such as cardboard, paper, plastic, wood, metal and glass.
"We have very ambitious recycling and recovery targets, which can only be achieved if everyone in the company utilise effectively the facilities we have put in place with support from our appointed contractor Viridor," said Rob Buck, social and environment developer for IKEA.
The 'Recycle for IKEA’ roadshows follow on from a site visit in April to Viridor’s Materials Recycling Facility in Peterborough by 22 managers and team leaders from IKEA to find out how the waste management company is helping the retailer achieve its zero waste to landfill ambitions.
The IKEA Group employees 123,000 co-workers in 25 territories and generates annual sales of more than €21.5 billion (£18 billion). The UK makes up seven per cent of its sales.
