Huhne to learn fate over criminal charges

3rd February 2012
The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, will learn this morning if he is to face criminal charges relating to speeding ticket offences.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, will announce the decision at the London headquarters of the Crown Prosecution Service at 10am.

If the Energy Secretary is charged it is widely expected he will stand down from his Cabinet position while facing the very real risk of a custodial sentence if found guilty.

The decision on whether to bring criminal charges relates to allegations Mr Huhne asked his former wife Vicky Pryce to accept speeding points on her licence on his behalf.

Essex police had been investigating the matter for since May last year, during which time officers questioned the pair twice.

Huhne has consistently denied the allegation.
