Hemp-based natural fibre breathes new life into insulation market

A new insulation product made from sustainably sourced hemp is offering a renewable and low carbon alternative to synthetic equivalents.

Developed by Hemp Technology, Breathe is said to offer a fully renewable material that can cut carbon emissions at the same time as offering superior performance for insulation of lofts, walls and floors. It was launched this week, at the same time as the Government announced its green strategy that aims to insulate six million homes by 2011 and all practical loft and cavity walls by 2015.

Breathe is made from UK grown hemp and flax and according to its makers has a thermal conductivity of 0.039 W/mK (watts/metre-kelvin), meaning it performs better than many fibre products and last as long as the building to which it is applied.

It has been named Breathe because of its breathability qualities. It can absorb and release moisture without damage to its thermal performance and is tolerant to condensation. Hemp Technology says the product is non-toxic and non-irritant and meets building regulation requirements.

Available in a semi-rigid batt, Breathe insulation is available in thicknesses of 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, or 150mm. It comes in standard sizes of 1,200mm x 575mm and 1,200mm x 375mm.
