Ford to launch ECOnetic Fiesta and Focus in 2012

7th September 2011
Carmaker Ford will launch its two greenest family cars, the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic and Ford Focus ECOnetic, across Europe in mid-2012.
The Ford Focus ECOnectic delivers tailpipe CO2 emissions of 89 grams per kilometre (g/km), and at 83.1 miles per gallon (mpg) is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid family car on the European market. The Fiesta ECOnetic achieves tailpipe emissions of 87 g/km, while advanced fuel saving technology, including Auto Start-Stop, means the car achieves 85.6 mpg. The two cars are part of an aggressive strategy by Ford to lead the market in fuel efficient and green technologies through its ECOnetic Technology brand. Half of all Ford cars sold in Europe next year will carry the ECOnetic Technology badge, the company said.

"The Focus and Fiesta ECOnetic technology will deliver stunning fuel economy and still be fun to drive – a combination that would have seemed impossible a few years ago," said Dr. Thilo Seibert, manager, Sustainability and Electrification Strategy, Ford of Europe.

EcoBoost engine
The ECOnetic Fiesta and Focus will be show at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, where Ford will also unveil its smallest engine yet, the three-cylinder, 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, developed in Britain. Although yet to be tested for tailpipe emissions, Ford says the EcoBoost engine delivers the performance of a four-cylinder with the benefits of a more fuel-efficient performance and lower emissions.

Advanced technology
The Focus ECOnetic’s unique high efficiency engine features the first lean NOx adsorbing technology in a Ford diesel. It is a key enabler of the record low CO2 emissions as it allows an even leaner combustion process in the engine. The NOx emissions are adsorbed in the trap and neutralised into nitrogen and water in the regeneration phase of the trap.

The Fiesta ECOnetic will be the first car in this range to feature Auto-Start-Stop technology.

Sustainability strategy
The expansion of ECOnetic Technology is part of Ford's overall sustainability strategy, including the target of reducing CO2 emissions of its cars by 30 per cent between 2006 and 2020. The company has achieved an 11 per cent reduction in CO2 since 2006 and said it’s on track to meet the 2020 commitment. A further 10 g/km overall fleet improvement will be achieved within the next two years, Ford claims.

The ECOnetic Technology badge will appear on more than 30 models by the end of next year, Ford said, including the Ford Focus Electric, an all-electric vehicle that debuts next year, and the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid coming to market in 2013.

The EcoBoost engine will make it first appearance in the new Ford B-MAX and in Ford’s next generation of hybrid vehicles, including the C-MAX.
