Environment Agency issues flood alert for West Cornwall

Climate change news – by GreenWise staff
2nd November 2011
The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for West Cornwall.
The flood alert was issued this afternoon for 10 locations in West Cornwall. The Environment Agency said homes and businesses should be prepared for possible floods in areas around the River Yealm, River Plym and Tory Brook, River Lynher, the Lower River Tamar, the Middle River Tamar, the River Fowey, the Rivers Looe and Seaton, St Austell and Par Rivers, and North Cornwall Rivers. The warning follows a forecast for widespread and heavy rain in the early hours of Thursday November 3, only clearing by the afternoon.

"Southern parts of Cornwall and Devon are most likely to see the heaviest showers which may merge to give longer spells of rain," the Environment Agency said on its website.

A flood alert is not as severe as a 'flood warning' or 'severe flood warning', both of which require immediate action.

Today's flood alert follows flooding in parts of Britain just over a week ago.
