Energy & Resources GreenWire: RWM Brings Together Environmental Innovation and Advice

RWM
13th August 2010
Environmental experts from the public and private sectors will speak in over 40 free seminars at this year’s Recycling & Waste Management Exhibition (NEC, Birmingham from 14 to 16 September 2010).
With over 500 exhibiting companies, three seminar theatres and a new Waste Minimisation Zone, RWM10 will highlight how to cut costs, improve efficiency and reduce the amount of waste you produce.

RWM exhibitors include companies and organisations operating throughout the supply chain from suppliers of bins, recyclers of a wide range of materials including paper and plastics to environmental consultants and waste management companies. Entry is free and also gives visitors access to three days of seminars offering invaluable legislative and financial advice and first-hand case studies of successful public and private sector projects.

New features for RWM10 include a Waste Minimisation Zone with a "drop in surgery" where visitors can talk with resource efficiency experts and the exhibition’s first ever Catwalk showcasing exciting designs from textile recycling. There will also be new visitor facilities on the show floor including an RWM Restaurant offering pre-bookable table service lunches and the Viridor Visitor Lounge designed for informal networking and internet research.

The indoor exhibition area has been expanded to accommodate companies exhibiting for the first time and returning exhibitors booking larger stands. The new Envirolink Pavilion, for example, will showcase a range of companies from the North West region’s recycling and waste sector. Worth £1,064 million, this sub sector includes facility operators, service providers, technology designers, builders and engineers; as well as a growing range of companies developing products containing recycled content.

Free Seminars
This year’s seminar programme offers invaluable advice in a wide range of areas including resource efficiency, renewables and energy from waste.

Sessions in the Waste Minimisation Zone will outline how both the public and private sector shave reduced waste to landfill. Case studies will include an investigation into the waste strategy employed by the Home Retail Group (Argos and Homebase) and a look at how local authorities are tackling commercial and industrial waste. Michael Warhurst, senior campaigner on Resource Use for Friends of the Earth will also pose questions about new legislation and its effect on UK resource efficiency.

Day one (September 14) at the Energy & Water Seminar Theatre begins with a look at the country’s infrastructure and the funding that is available for low carbon, renewable energy and energy from waste projects. Antony Oliver, editor of New Civil Engineer will examine the impact of the recession on funding, money flow and the most appropriate infrastructure to support development. Further seminar highlights will include an Environment Agency presentation examining the available energy from waste resources in the UK. While Aaron Berry, head of carbon and sustainability at The Renewable Fuels Agency offers an update on the UK’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation and the Renewable Energy Directive.

Energy from waste case studies will be covered on day two (September 15). Antony Greener, waste strategy and development director, Nottingham City Council will outline how it managed to generate four per cent of the City's energy from waste and renewables. The subject of financing energy from food waste will be covered by John Stephens, relationship manager with the Environment Team at Triodos Bank. Richard Gueterbock, director at Clearfleau will share the results of an investigation into the process of generating renewable energy from liquid effluent using innovative anaerobic digestion technologies.

On day three (September 16) Norman Fulton, sales director at KMH Systems discusses separating municipal solid waste into fractions for use in anaerobic and refuse derived fuels. Subsequent presentations will include a review of the latest alternative technologies to help the UK to comply with EU landfill regulations from Chris Oldfield, managing director at Riverside Waste Machinery. Victor Buchanan, managing director of Bioflame, will present a waste-to-energy case study.
