Businesses target own employees in home insulation campaign

A group of companies have joined forces with the Government in a new campaign to get their employees to insulate their homes.
Launched today by four companies – Sainsbury’s, Accenture, Aviva and HSBC – and the Government through its ACT ON CO2 campaign and the Energy Saving Trust, ‘Insulate today’ is a pilot project. It aims to incentive 250,000 employees to get their homes insulated and help the Government meet its target of getting all lofts and cavity walls in the UK insulated by 2015. If successful, the scheme will be rolled out as larger-scale nationwide employee engagement programmes.

Home insulation plays a key part in the Government’s ‘Green Homes, Warmer Homes’ strategy, published earlier this month, which aims to get seven million British households benefiting from eco upgrades by 2020 and aims to secure up to 65,000 green jobs.

Government research shows that most homes can save around £160 every year by getting their loft and cavity walls properly insulated, reducing their carbon footprint in the process. But home insulation still remains a low priority for most householders, with less than one in 10 homes having the recommended amount. Last year, the Government estimates British households wasted over £500 million in energy bills through poor insulation.

‘Insulate Today’ aims to change that by using the internal communications channels of the companies involved to incentive their employees to insulate their homes by making it easier and cheaper to do so.

Insulate Today has been devised by 'We Will If You Will'
It has been devised by ‘We Will If You Will’, a five-year collaborative project between business, civil society and Government, that aims to make sustainable living appealing and accessible to the mainstream UK population.

“The collaborative approach of ‘We Will If You Will’ brings together a coalition of some of the UK’s biggest employers, helping us to target a massive audience through established and trusted channels of communication,” said Insulate Today campaign director, David Hall.

Employee engagement scheme will provide exclusive insulation offers
Under the pilot project, employees will be offered exclusive insulation offers, provided through Sainsbury’s Energy, the retailer’s new energy service launched in partnership with EDF Energy. Further incentives such as free installations and free energy monitors will also be used to encourage employees to get on board.

Launching the campaign today, Joan Ruddock, Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, said: “The Government’s ambition is to see all lofts and cavity walls in the UK insulated by 2015. The ‘Insulate Today’ initiative will make a real contribution towards this target.”
